The Abstracted Landscape

Please bring a packed lunch with you on the day. We’ll provide tea, coffee, and a selection of biscuits and cake.

We’ll be painting and drawing outdoors during the day, so please come prepared for all kinds of weather. Wear comfortable clothing that’s suitable for the conditions and make sure it’s something you don’t mind getting a bit of paint on.

On the day we will be working with Acrylic paint, mixed media & collage.

Suggested kit list

REMEMBER these are just suggestions and you may have most or similar already, please do not rush out and buy everything on the list. I’m very happy for you to bring whatever you have and use for your own work.

There are a few items though that are ESSENTIAL to bring with you for the workshop which are highlighted in red.

The links I have included are examples of the materials I use. YOU DON’T NEED THE EXACT SAME ONES, they are purely to help you find something similar.

Drawing

A2 Pad - cartridge paper (minimum 200 - 220gsm) needs to be thick enough to handle paint without buckling or warping.

A4 or Square sketchbook - ideally spiral bound, we will be tearing sketches out to collage with.

Compressed charcoal

Graphite Pencils - 8B or similar

Crayons* either/or Caran D’ache Neocolor I & Neocolor II - or similar

Stabilo Woody* - good fun to draw with, you only need a few colours

Soft pastels*

Oil pastels*

Any other media you like to draw & mark make with

*any colours you have but good to include blues, greens, pink and warm colours orange and ochre etc.

Acrylic Paints - I will be using Daler Rowney System3 acrylic paints, they’re a good medium quality option and reasonably priced. When you’re buying your own paints, try to avoid very cheap ones, as when mixed together they turn muddy very easily. https://www.jacksonsart.com/daler-rowney-system3-acrylic-paint

Colours - suggested limited palette for the workshop.

Black (any) - 150ml

Titanium White - 150ml

Lemon Yellow - 150ml (Cadmium or Primary yellow are good alternatives) - 150ml

Yellow Ochre - 59ml

Burnt Sienna - 59ml

Ultramarine Blue - 150ml

Cadmium Red - 59ml

Please feel free to also bring any other acrylic paints you have and use in your work, just remember you will have to carry them when we paint plein air.

Brushes - A mix of your favourite brushes. I like using a 1.5”/2” flat hog bristle brushes, they hold paint well and are good for quick gestural mark making.

Flat hog bristle brush 1.5” or 2”
