Submissions

General information and advice on submissions

Our process is based on hand selection. Artists are invited by our curatorial team to exhibit with us. We do, however, consider submissions from artists outside of this system and are always open to working with those who we believe will fit with the themes and general vision of the gallery.

We do not run open call exhibitions.

As an artist run gallery, we understand it from the artist’s point of view as well as the gallerist’s. With our curatorial team also being represented by numerous galleries as individual artists, we have an insight into the system from both viewpoints.

There are no solid rules for what we look for. There are, however, factors that the artist must consider before approaching a gallery, whether our gallery or another.

What we look for

Professional or semi-professional artists with a demonstrable body of work that is easily accessible online via an up-to-date website (including the website of other galleries) and/or an active social media presence.
Whilst a strong exhibition history, gallery representation and cv helps, it is not essential. We are always willing to work with emerging artists who demonstrate professionalism and a vision that aligns with ours.

We do not care about - or factor in - academic qualifications. It is all about the work and the style, vision and professionalism of the artist.

Representation is different to being invited to exhibit in one of our curated exhibitions. Our representation procedure is solely for artists with whom we have built a relationship through frequent exhibitions or other factors.

The most important thing is that the work is in sync with the kind of work we exhibit in the gallery. Like artists, galleries also have a style and aesthetic. This takes a little research from the artist to understand as much as they can about the gallery they are approaching. If you believe your work will fit, then an accompanying note about why will always help. Is there a particular artist’s work in the gallery you can relate to? Have you visited one of the exhibitions or seen it online? Do you think your work would have looked great in one of our previous or current exhibitions? If so, tell us why.

Geography is important. Currently we do not work with international artists. Equally we don’t work with artists just because they are local. Also, we can’t work with artists who are represented by other local galleries.

Our gallery leans towards painting and other 2D work that deals with the subjects of landscape, still life and semi-abstraction. At the present time we are not exhibiting 3D work but may do so in the future.

Before considering a submission, please read this guide HERE which details what we look for in an artist’s work. It also lists the styles that would not suit our gallery.

Whilst we are an artist-run gallery, The Point Contemporary is also a business. We invest in and exhibit artists who we believe in and whose work is both aesthetically and commercially appealing and viable. Selling work is mutually beneficial; in that sense an artist must be aware of this element when considering working with a gallery.

Our team are always on the lookout for exciting and interesting work. This is mainly on social media, so make sure you are sharing your work and process online to help get you noticed. We also visit exhibitions, open studios and online exhibitions. The key is to make your work, develop your style and present it in the best way you can. Write about your work, enter open calls, arrange small exhibitions, and build up a strong portfolio.

Also, it’s important to note that if your work does not fit with our gallery, it doesn’t mean that it won’t be right for another. Be yourself, create in your way. Don’t compromise or try to fit in. Creative integrity is the best and most sustainable path.
