Richard Bayliss
Richard Bayliss has been a professional designer since graduating from the Royal
College of Art 30 years ago and worked in the creative industry designing and
visualising 3D environments for large commercial projects.
In recent years, however, he has returned to his love of painting and now focuses
on the landscape surrounding his studio on the South Cambridgeshire border.
The ever-changing land, sky, and weather of the English countryside serve as a
continuous source of inspiration through the seasons
.
Richard’s process begins with quick, expressive sketch paintings on paper. These
paintings capture the immediate essence of what he sees and feels, whether he’s
working outside en plein air or in his studio. His initial paintings are often loose
and energetic, full of instinctive mark-making. From these, he creates collages,
tearing and reassembling the paper to introduce an element of abstraction and
unpredictability, allowing for unexpected marks and compositions to emerge. These
collages sometimes evolve into finished pieces, or they serve as references or
inspiration for his final paintings.
Through his work, Richard Bayliss seeks to capture not just a visual representation
of the landscape, but its emotional resonance - the raw, shifting beauty of the
environment, and the way we experience and connect with the world around us.
